Commit it to Prayer

The second stanza of the hymn “What a friend we have in Jesus” speaks of the peace we often forfeit, and the needless pain we bear, when we do not carry everything to God in prayer. Indeed if we would but go to God in prayer about what we need to do to better manage finances as couples, we will be surprised how much conflict will disappear over this matter.

When we get stuck with our spouses on the matter of how to manage finances, we will do well to take the advice of James who wrote, “If anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask of God who gives generously” James 1:5. One of the peculiar attributes of the wisdom that God gives is that it leads to peace for, “the wisdom from above is first of all pure and peaceable” James 3:17.

A couple will greatly benefit if they actually pray together over their finances and the decisions they need to make.
