Align your Priorities

To manage diversity in marriage, couples should acknowledge that perspectives about money can be set pretty early in life and may not change dramatically because they marry someone who sees things differently. They can however manage that diversity and its potential to create conflict by building a partnership, which emphasizes that they are on the same team and not adversaries.

The unique thing about teams is that they have shared goals. For a couple to be able to work as a team to manage their different money perspectives, they have to align their priorities. If someone with a saver perspective is married to another with a spender perspective, they have to find a way to align their priorities to save and spend.

In finding alignment, the key is to acknowledge that both parties have bias and seek to look to an unbiased and perfect umpire, God, and let the desire to please Him influence all money decisions.
